Sources come first
Codes, regulations, statistics and local rules are checked against primary sources: government agencies, code bodies, standards organizations such as NFPA and CSIA, the US Census Bureau, the EIA and NOAA. Every page ends with a list of the sources used. Where a rule could not be confirmed, we describe it generally and name the office to call rather than guessing.
Prices are estimates, and we say so
Cost figures are based on 2026 national surveys (HomeGuide and Angi) adjusted for local labor and demand. They are ranges, not quotes. Always get a written estimate. See our chimney sweep cost guide for how prices are built.
Worked examples are illustrative
Guides include worked examples showing how a situation, a finding and a price fit together. These are illustrative scenarios based on common cases, not stories about real customers or companies.
No company recommendations in guides
